Some trips you take once and check the box. Mexico City during Día de Muertos is not one of those trips.

We first did Day of the Dead in CDMX back in 2023, and honestly? It kind of ruined us. The energy of the parade, the roar inside Estadio Azteca, the flavor of real-deal birria tacos from a street vendor who's been perfecting the craft, probably longer than most of us have been watching football—it all hit different. So different(ly), in fact, that we brought even more footy travelers with us in 2025. And now, like the stubborn, football-obsessed, culture-chasing travelers that we are… we're doing it again.

October 29 – November 2, 2026. Five days. Two Liga MX matches at Estadio Azteca. One Día de Muertos parade. A whole lot of mezcal, micheladas, and memories in between (foggy memories, but memories nonetheless). And this time? We're leveling up!

But first things first…

Look, we could give you the practical pitch—that CDMX is one of the most affordable, exciting, food-obsessed cities on the planet. That Estadio Azteca is a cathedral of world football that every fan should experience at least once. That the Día de Muertos celebrations are genuinely one of the most beautiful cultural traditions you'll ever witness in person. All of that is true.

But the real reason we keep coming back? It's the feeling. There's something about Mexico City during this time of year that just... feels right, that feels easy. The streets are electric with color and music. The ofrendas on every corner remind you that even death is worth celebrating when you've lived with passion. And the football? It's not background noise in this city. Along with the music and the food, it's the heartbeat.

Of course, if you were on the 2023 or 2025 trips, you already know. If you weren't... well, that's kind of why we're writing this.

So let's talk about the upgraded experience. In previous years, we coordinated lodging, matches, and a few out-of-grounds cultural adventures, and let everyone find their own way on things like breakfast and down-time activities. It worked, and we’re keeping some built-in free time for fellow footy travelers (FFTs) to explore parts of the city they’ve had on their list, but we’ve had some good suggestions these past two trips and are ready to add in more (especially more tacos and drinks). 

Enter the Casa.

Casa Aventureros de Fútbol '26 is a nine-bedroom house in Coyoacán—one of Mexico City's most historic and vibrant neighborhoods, and conveniently closer to Estadio Azteca than most other popular CDMX barrios. Equipped with a peaceful patio, terrace space for swapping stories over cervezas, a full kitchen where we’ll enjoy communal breakfasts (we're talking chilaquiles, molletes, sincronizadas—the works), and WiFi for anyone who needs to briefly pretend they're still a functioning adult with responsibilities.

This is where The Footy Travelers philosophy comes to life. We've always believed that football fans—regardless of which club or country crest they wear on their chest—have more in common as humans than they have differences as supporters. The shared house is our way of putting that belief into practice. You'll arrive as an FFT. You'll leave as friends. That's the goal, at least. Worst case scenario, you’ll leave with some great stories, a few new group chat contacts, and appreciate our rivalry-respecting motto of “Be loud. Be proud. And be good to each other.” We'll take it.

Wondering what each day is going to look like? Let's walk you through it.

We'll be settling into the Casa on Day 1, getting our bearings in Coyoacán, and—depending on when most folks land—finding our way to one of the neighborhood's many incredible bars or restaurants to break the ice. Think of it as the soft opening before the main event. Ease in. Have a marg or mezcal. Meet the people you'll be chanting next to at Azteca in a couple of days. No rush. It’s a short, but long weekend ahead.

There's only one way to get to know each other better than breaking bread together... doing it on a boat.

We'll kick Day 2 off on the iconic canals of Xochimilco—the kind of experience that sounds touristy until you're actually floating next to boats filled with locals, cervezas, pulque, and margaritas in hand, surrounded by color and music, wondering why you don't do this every weekend. Lunch and drinks are included (you're welcome), and optional side tours are available for those who want to, say, hold an axolotl. Yeah, you read that right. Bring some extra pesos.

After some rest and recovery in the late afternoon—because you'll probably need it—we shift gears from serene waterways to full-on spectacle. We'll meet up with our local guide, who will walk us through the vibrant history of lucha libre, teach us the finer points of proper fan etiquette (not so much rules, but rather… a certain level of encouraged, aggressive behavior?), and set us up with street food, beers, and local spirits before we head into the arena. There might even be a special surprise in store for you along the way. We're not saying what though, that would ruin the surprise.

Between the masks, the mayhem, and the infectious energy of the crowd (and beyond the obvious fact that this is a trip for those who love their footy), this night has been a highlight of every single CDMX trip. If you've never experienced lucha libre live, just know: you'll be cheering louder than you thought possible for a sport you probably knew nothing about six hours earlier.

This is the day we’ve all been waiting for. 

The morning is yours—and you might need it after that incredible night out (we're not judging, we're right there with you). But come midday, we'll rally the crew and head toward the Día de Muertos parade route near El Ángel de la Independencia. But first... tacos. Obviously.

We've tried to describe the parade in sufficient words before. The best we’ve been able to do is to say: It's an explosion of color, music, skeleton floats, painted faces, and collective human energy that vibrates through the streets of one of the world's greatest cities. Face painting is optional, but highly enjoyable—trust us on this one. You'll want the photos.

And then? We head south. To the monument of Mexican fútbol itself: Estadio Azteca. Club América vs. Toluca under the lights after an afternoon spent celebrating life and death in the streets of CDMX. If you've ever wondered what it feels like to ride a wave of pure cultural energy straight into a football stadium... this is it. Will there be more tacos along the way? Probably. Will there be refreshing micheladas? Most certainly.

More fútbol? More local culture? Of course—that's what footy traveling is all about. And our last full day together has it all.

After breakfast at the Casa, the day is yours to explore your personal must-do list in CDMX. Some FFTs might stay local, wandering through Coyoacán and visiting La Casa Azul (the Frida Kahlo Museum) or checking out the footy-themed Day of the Dead display outside the local government building bearing her name. Others might venture farther afield to Chapultepec Park, the National Museum of Anthropology, or one of the countless taquerías they Googled at 2 AM the night before. Someone might even try to squeeze in some time at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez for the F1 race happening this very same weekend.

Come late afternoon though, we regroup and head back to Azteca for our final match and group event of the weekend: Cruz Azul vs. León, kicking off at 6 PM. Two professional club matches at one of the most legendary stadiums in the world. Not many footy travelers can say that. (Well, ours can.)

They say all good things must come to an end. We'd say... only until next time.

Most meals. Breakfast daily, plus food and drinks provided before, during, or after our group activities—both footy and non-footy.

Transportation guidance. Where matchday transport isn't included outright, we'll guide the group using local transit, traveling with you to and from the stadium so nobody gets separated on the Metro. Has it happened before? Who’s to say?

What's not included? Flights to and from CDMX—we trust you to find what works best for your schedule and budget (but we're happy to share tips from our own past bookings). Same goes for airport transfers, though we'll have a WhatsApp thread going so folks can coordinate shared rides if they'd rather not solo it.

Here's the deal. Casa Aventureros de Fútbol has nine rooms. Nine. That's it. And they're first come, first served.

Room options range from economy (two twin beds, shared bathroom—great for friends traveling together or solo FFTs looking to keep costs down) to premium private rooms with their own bathroom. If having your own bathroom is non-negotiable for you, book early. Seriously. The private rooms will go first.

Traveling with a buddy or partner? Five of the nine rooms have queen or king beds—perfect for sharing. Just grab the room plus an "Add a FFT" package and you're set.

Flying solo and want to save? The economy rooms are already priced at less than half the premium rate, and you can cut that even further by coordinating with a friend or letting us pair you with another guest. Just let us know in the checkout notes.

Not just the 90 minutes on the pitch, but everything around it. The walk to the stadium. The pre-match street tacos. The post-match patio debrief where someone inevitably brings up a poor refereeing decision. The morning after, when you're all quietly nursing coffees in the kitchen, already half-planning the next trip together.

That's footy traveling. That's what we're building. And Mexico City during Día de Muertos is one of the most magical backdrops on the planet to experience it.
